Finished inks

Here are the inks for my latest set of ‘Clamcakes.’ These are all hand done. I’m quite old school that way, kind of. While I can do these digitally, I much prefer the hand drawn approach. At the same time, I can do them (and have done them) with the really old school Crow Quill pen(s) and ink well. I love inking them that way, but it takes longer. So, I use Fudenasuke “brush” pens and Micron pens.

In this era of everything being digital, particularly with the advent of AI, I feel it’s more important than ever to keep these techniques alive! And, until they come up with an autopen for drawing, this will remain a human endeavor.

Donald Duck!

For all you Disney/Donald Duck lovers – I finished the recreation of the old Dell comics “Walt Disney’s Comics and Stories” of this cover from 1945, by Carl Barks. I will have it with me when I’m at the Seven Cedars Fall Festival Sept. 6th 120 John Mowry road, Smithfield, RI. Stop by and see me!

Retro Comic Book Cover…

Just finished some Old School inks for this throwback cover of Walt Disney Comics from 1945! I haven’t pulled out the ole’ dip pens for quite some time, but I do think it’s important to preserve (and use) the old methods. This will be particularly true when the machines/AI take over and no longer allow us to create our own art!

Comic Cover Inks

Here are the inks for a couple of pieces I did last week. The first, “Tales to Astonish” is a commission piece. The second, “Curse of the Serpent” was done for last weeks class, ‘Penciling for Graphic Novels.’

The students got to see the completed pencils, but wanted to see the full inks, so I’m posting this for them. I know they’re looking – ‘cuz I can hear them breathing on the screen!

These are photos of the inks. I will be posting the scanned inks, as well as the full color versions. It takes time, so stop pressuring me!

Thunder Lizard inks

I did a drawing, “Thunder Lizard,” for an adventure panel comic. I liked the layout but, as happens sometimes, as I was finishing it I realized the physics of the tail swing were off.
So I did a redesign. Now the physics are correct and the blacks present a much more balanced drawing while giving this long-neck more weight. I also added more texture between the lights and shadows. All in all, a better composition.

Around the World!

Though, at times it doesn’t seem like it, I am always working on something. Take this recent caricature commission; I finished it up last week, but had to wait until it was delivered to post it. But, finally, here it is . . . !
